Different genres await moviegoers for the rest of the month of November at Dendy Cinemas Portside in Hamilton. From among the films that are currently showing, our top picks for the month include two action comic book movies, two biographical films, one comedy, and one family drama.

Thor: Ragnarok

“Thor: Ragnarok” has been showing since the 26th of October and will run until the 15th of November. This is the third chapter in Marvel’s “Thor” series. The movie stars Australia’s very own Chris Hemsworth and Cate Blanchett, joined by Tom Hiddleston, and Idris Elba. New Zealander Director Taika Waititi has been at the helm of the movie. The film is less serious and dark than the two previous instalments of the movie franchise.

Speaking of less serious, movie goers will be surprised to find a lot of Aussie trivia within “Thor: Ragnarok”. Hemsworth has especially requested that the film be shot on the Gold Coast. He has also seen to it that many locals, including indigenous, were hired for the production. Director Waititi has used the colours of the Aboriginal flag to design the ship used by the heroes to their escape. Hemsworth and Blanchett have also  used their Aussie accents in the movie.

“Thor: Ragnarok” promises fun and relatable humour. However, it has been rated M for its mature content. Many characters have been killed in the film through slashing and stabbing. Villain Hela might be too scary for the young audience too. There are also some use of adult elements like curse words, masturbation, orgies, and alcoholism.

Bad Moms 2: A Bad Mom Christmas

Next up is “Bad Moms 2: A Bad Mom Christmas”, which has been showing since 2nd of November and will run until the 15th of November. It stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, and Susan Sarandon. The film is directed by Jon Lucas.

Despite tackling friendship and the bonds that daughters and mothers share, this comedy film is rated MA15+ for jokes about drugs and sex. There are scenes involving stripping, too much drinking and even drugs, conversations referring to male parts, a young child who cursed, and sexy dances with Santa.

The film, however, remains recommended, especially to mothers, couples, and group of friends who want to have laugh-out-loud moments together.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

“The Man Who Invented Christmas” is showing on the 30th of November, but will have a special preview on 15th of November at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Viewers in the morning will be treated to Christmas Cake, while the evening viewers will be enjoy Yuletide cocktails.

Here is an excerpt from the film’s synopsis:

Using real-life inspiration and a vivid imagination, author Charles Dickens brings Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other classic characters to life in “A Christmas Carol,” forever changing the holiday season into the celebration known today.

The film, which is rated PG, features Dan Stevens, Jonathan Pryce, Christopher Plummer, Miriam Margolyes and is directed by Bharat Nalluri.

Justice League

“Justice League” is another comic book/superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero team of the same name. Rated M, it is showing on the 16th of November. The film’s stellar cast – Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavil as Superman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg – has made it an easy choice among moviegoers.

Goodbye, Christopher Robin

The biographical pic “Goodbye, Christopher Robin” comes to the Dendy cinemas on 23rd of November. The film stars Domhnall Gleeson, Margot Robbie, Kelly Macdonald, and Will Tilston.

Some excerpts from the film’s synopsis:

After leaving London for the English countryside, writer A.A. Milne starts to spin fanciful yarns about his son’s growing collection of stuffed animals. These stories form the basis for “Winnie-the-Pooh” and “The House at Pooh Corner,” published respectively in 1926 and 1928. Milne and his family soon become swept up in the instant success of the books, while the enchanting tales bring hope and comfort to the rest of postwar England.

The film has not been rated yet as of press time. Tickets are not yet on sale as well.

Wonder

“Wonder” is showing on the 30th of November but will have a special preview screening on the 22nd of November at 6:30 p.m. The drama film, which stars Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Jacob Tremblay, and Daveed Diggs, will make moviegoers cry as it follows the journey of a young boy born with facial differences.

Audiences will find that even the trailer of the film can be a bit of a tearjerker.
